When you buy an older home, you get older everything. The median age of an owner-occupied American home is now greater than 40 years old, according to recent housing statistics.
That means most bathrooms hiding behind that pretty tile are packing:

Today's showers want bigger flow rates, digital interfaces, rain heads, body sprays. Old 1970s plumbing doesn't like any of that stuff.
Consider this. You're going to be removing fixtures, cutting open walls and disturbing pipes anyway. Why not take the opportunity to correct anything else you can while you have access? Cutting corners by not preparing will result in leaks, mold and need to rip back your finish work in six months. Nobody likes that. And it's not cheap.
Inspecting the Plumbing (The Right Way)
Before ripping anything out, get eyes on what's actually behind those walls.
If you're looking to do more than just a cosmetic update, it's wise to hire a licensed plumbing and HVAC company. They can pressure test your lines, schedule a heat pump installation for your new water heater, and coordinate your rough-in work so that each trade comes at the correct time. This eliminates days of lost time and expensive reworks.
Here's what to check first:

Any signs of past leaks or corrosion
Galvanized steel supply lines were common in homes built prior to the 1960s. Over time they get narrower from mineral deposits forming inside of them. That's a big problem with today's high-demand shower heads that require strong flow. Weak water pressure or rusty water means the pipes are speaking to you.
Handling the Water Heater and Heat Pump Installation
Here's something most people miss when planning a new shower system...
Installing a new rain head/body-spray sends A LOT more hot water through the pipes than the builder-basic unit it's replacing. If your water heater can't produce enough hot water fast enough your dream shower ends up lukewarm before you can rinse out shampoo.
This is where you justify a heat pump installation on your plan. Heat pump water heaters can be 3-4 times more efficient than traditional electric ones. A family of four could save approximately $550 per year on energy bills.
Why a heat pump installation makes sense during a bathroom overhaul:

Consider the heat pump installation at the planning stage. It will impact on electrical supply requirements, drainage for condensate, and location of the unit.
Another thing to know... Heat pump water heaters require space around them. They extract heat from the air so they won't do well in a cramped closet. Ideally, located in a basement, garage or utility room with lots of open space. Discuss this in the planning stage - moving it after installation is a pain.
Waterproofing and Structural Prep
Modern shower systems love to leak into old subfloors. That's not a great look.
Old bathrooms tend to come with this qualifier - The original waterproofing (if any) has failed. Tar paper, thin plastic sheeting or simply paint on drywall was standard. None of that works permanently.
Don't even think about setting that first tile until you've waterproofed correctly from the studs out. That includes:

Sheet membrane or liquid waterproofing behind tile

Fresh subfloor if there's soft spots or water damage

Sloped mortar bed toward the drain

Blocking added inside walls for grab bars and heavy fixtures
Inspect the joists as well. Older homes can have undersized framing that bounces when subjected to heavy stone tile or a curbless shower. A bouncing floor cracks grout and defeats waterproofing very quickly.
Curbless "wet room" type showers are all the rage. They require additional structural engineering to slope the drain correctly. Not all existing bathrooms can accommodate without redoing the floor.
Electrical, Venting, and Finishing Touches
Old bathrooms typically don't have the capacity to provide enough amperage that you need for modern shower fixtures. Digital shower control panels, heated floors, improved lighting, and even a new exhaust fan all require electricity.
Most older bathrooms were only built with one 15 amp circuit powering everything. 15 amps just aren't enough these days. Retrofitting to 20 amps with proper GFCI protection is mandatory by code in most locations.
Before closing walls back up, add:

Ventilation ducted OUTSIDE, not into the attic
One of the most missed features on older bathroom remodels is ventilation. A lot of older bathroom fans exhaust into insulation which becomes moldy and rots framing eventually. Do it right from the start.
Lastly, verify permits. Any alteration that relocates plumbing fixtures, adds a circuit or corrects the vent usually needs one. Operating without permits can really sting when it comes time to resale.

Getting an existing bathroom ready for a modern shower system is more work than most anticipate. However, the rewards are a shower that lives up to the advertising - consistent pressure, unlimited hot water and finishes that will stand the test of time.
