5 Home Maintenance Jobs You Can't Put Off

Putting off home maintenance tasks is tempting for a lot of homeowners. It's one of those annoying things that many people just don't want to do, especially if it's costly. It often feels psychologically easier to just put it off.

Unfortunately, though, there are a lot of home maintenance jobs that you can't leave for the future. You have to do them today, otherwise, they'll just cause more issues over time, including total system failure.

In this post, we look at some of the jobs that you don't want to put off and that you should deal with straight away, even if they might be annoying.

Cleaning your gutters

One of the things that should be at the top of your list of priorities is to clean your gutters. If you don't do this, it can lead to damage to your roof, walls, and foundations. Fortunately, it's an easy job. You could go to a hardware store and buy the tools you need to clean out the gutters yourself. Or you can just get a professional service to do it for you. They'll remove all the leaves, and then they'll tell you about your flow rate to make sure that everything drains properly and that no water leaks over the sides.

Fixing your furnace

During winter, furnace repair also becomes a priority. If you don't deal with it during the season, when it's most active, then you can run into problems later on, including complete failure, just when the coldest weather comes. What's more, this time of year, it's hard to get gas engineers out to deal with the issues. So you can be waiting up to a week to resolve the problem, which isn't ideal when temperatures are hovering around zero degrees Celsius.

Testing and maintaining smoke detectors

Another home maintenance task you don't want to put off is testing and maintaining your smoke detectors.

Usually, you'll want to replace batteries every year and then swap out units every 10 years once they become out of date. If you don't do this, you may not be able to detect dangers in your home. It could also mean the difference between a mild mishap and a complete disaster, especially if you don't detect fires early.

Inspecting your roof

You can't really see your roof from the ground, so inspecting it up close and personal with professional assistance is absolutely vital. The reason for this is even small cracks can lead to much bigger problems over time which lead to leaking and dampness in your attic. You may also need to deal with biological issues like mosses growing on the roof, which can cause damage to roofing materials over time.

Flushing your water heater

Lastly, you'll want to make sure that you always flush your water heater on a regular basis. Pushing a lot of water through the system can reduce sediment buildup substantially and increase the lifespan of the entire unit. If you can flush and the anode rod in particular, that can help the whole system last longer.
